The search for the female paramedic whose ambulance veered off a bridge into a river in Montagu resumed on Friday, Western Cape emergency services said.

“The team has not found the remains of the EMS practitioner yet and are still assisting police in pursuit of their missing colleague,” spokeswoman Keri Davids said.

She said the search team had grown from 20 emergency services and police members on Tuesday to 52 on Friday.

“EMS volunteers and members of the community have come from all over the Western Cape to support the team and assist with the search.”

On Thursday her family had asked that her name not be made public.

The ambulance went off the Cogmanskloof bridge into a flooded river near Montagu on Tuesday morning. Rescuers found the vehicle about 200m from the bridge on Wednesday.

Several divers, both from emergency services and police, were looking for her. The woman had been driving from Montagu to Ashton at 5.30am on Tuesday when the accident happened.

She managed to alert the communications centre in Worcester. - Sapa
