Cape Town -

A man let Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni use his car to get to Gugulethu the same night honeymooner Anni Dewani was killed, the Western Cape High Court heard on Monday.

The second witness on the stand, whose identity may not be revealed, said he had been sitting in a Khayelitsha tavern round 10pm on November 13, 2010, when Qwabe approached him and asked for a lift.

“He told me he is having some of his friends who are coming from Somerset (West). He was going to meet his friends there (in Gugulethu),” the witness said.

He told Qwabe to wait until he was finished drinking, but then said he could use his white Mazda 323 and bring it back the next morning.

Qwabe refused to take the car by himself and the witness agreed to drive with him as a passenger.

Anni Dewani, 28, was shot in an apparent car hijacking in Gugulethu while on honeymoon with her husband Shrien in Cape Town in November 2010.

Shrien has been accused by various people of organising the killing of his wife, and making it look like a hijacking.

Mngeni was allegedly the man who pulled the trigger. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Qwabe was recently sentenced to 25 years in effect for his role in the plot, in a plea agreement.

The Dewani's shuttle driver Zola Tongo agreed to a plea bargain and was jailed for 18 years. - Sapa
