Cape Town - A man has been arrested in connection with the killing of two police officers in Hout Bay, Western Cape police commissioner Arno Lamoer said on Monday.

The man, 28, was arrested on Sunday night and would appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, he told reporters in Cape Town.

The two constables were on patrol in Imizamo Yethu on Friday night when they were shot at.

The woman officer, 26, died on the scene. Her male colleague died in hospital on Saturday night.

In a separate attack last week, metro police officer Mpumelelo Xakekile, 50, was shot dead while issuing a fine to a taxi driver in Khayelitsha.

An 18-year-old man will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court later on Monday for the crime.

Lamoer condemned the attacks, and said the police would not be intimidated.

“We will take action. We will arrest and we will go through the process of prosecution.”

He revealed that since the start of April, there had been more than 150 attacks on police officers in the line of duty, through shooting, stoning and assault.

“That is really a sad state of affairs because these attacks mean attacks on the state and attacks on the communities that we serve,” he said. - Sapa
