Cape Town - The man who allegedly butchered his six-week-old puppy and braaied it had a charge of animal cruelty against him provisionally withdrawn.

And the Daily Voice can reveal that the man walked out of court on Monday because of “absent” documentation.

The 43-year-old, whose identity is known to the Daily Voice, was due to appear at the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ Court on Monday. But because prosecutors were not in possession of his case docket and two outstanding warrants, the charge was provisionally withdrawn – until his paperwork could be sorted out.

The State could therefore not call the matter before court.

The self-confessed dog-killer’s case caused a buzz inside court, with everyone, including police officials, eager to see who the man who appeared in Friday’s Daily Voice. But many were left disappointed when the man’s name didn’t even appear on the court roll.

Detectives close to the investigation are yet to reveal when the man will be back to face the charge.

Meanwhile, animal rights authorities the SPCA has expressed outrage after having attended the scene where the man slaughtered a puppy at his Euclid Street home, Woodlands, Mitchell’s Plain, last week Thursday.

The SPCA’s Inspectorate Manager Moyo Mqabuko Ndukwana said that the Animal Protection Act makes provision where a warrant is not present.

“We are appealing to the State, why was the case withdrawn, when one can refer to the Animal Protection Act?” Ndukwana said.

According to Cape of Good Hope SPCA Spokesperson Lise-Marie Greeff-Villet the surviving mother and her puppies were confiscated after the incident and are in their care.

“This week we will approach the owner to encourage him to surrender these animals to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA,” she said.

“We obviously do not want to return these animals to the owner and will do everything in our power to keep them with us, however, we do need to follow the standard procedures.”

The suspected tik and heroin addict allegedly slit the female cross-breed puppy’s throat, removed its insides, skinned it, braaied it and then apparently ate the pup in front of shocked relatives.

The SPCA’s CEO Allan Perrins has since called for the man to never own a dog again.

The man’s family raised the alarm when he apparently threatened to kill another pup.
