The ANC has no plans to reprimand Youth League members involved in a fight with the City of Cape Town over portable loos.
|||Parliament, Cape Town - There is no need for the ANC to reprimand youth league members involved in a fight with the City of Cape Town, Deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana said on Thursday.
This was because both the African National Congress Youth League's Dullah Omar region and the ANC Western Cape had distanced themselves from the emptying of human waste on the steps of the provincial legislature, and the flinging of buckets of faeces at premier Helen Zille's bus.
Manana was responding to criticism by Democratic Alliance, Congress of the People and United Democratic Movement MPs in the National Assembly.
“The UDM condemns the ANCYL use of human waste in protest for portable loos in the Western Cape,” said MP Stanley Ntapane.
“Whatever the concerns, nothing justifies stooping to such a low level.”
Ntapane said this was part of the ANC's use of the principle of ungovernability and anarchy in areas where it was not in power.
He also cautioned the DA that the UDM had warned its provincial government on numerous occasions of the danger of failing to meaningfully consult the communities affected by its boardroom decisions.
Cope MP Nqaba Bhanga called on Cabinet ministers to publicly repudiate the ANCYL for the “despicable acts”.
Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor hit back, saying she was surprised only the UDM MP had spoken of the degrading conditions under which the people of Khayelitsha lived, in a province people were led to believe was capable, well-off, and the best run in the country.
“They must remember that we should talk about the people. The circumstances under which they live are disgraceful.... So, it's not a matter of what the youth league did, which is unacceptable, but what about the people?” Pandor asked. - Sapa
