Cape Town - Community Safety MEC Dan Plato plans to meet provincial police commissioner Arno Lamoer on Tuesday, and will discuss the investigation into the rape of a Norwegian exchange student on Signal Hill.

The 19-year-old student and a friend were robbed there nearly three months ago and the friend’s mother was not satisfied with the police’s progress in the case.

On Tuesday Plato’s spokesman Greg Wagner said the friend’s mother had met Plato a few weeks ago “to raise her concerns about the police investigation”.

“At the time (she) was not happy with the progress being made and these concerns were then communicated (by Plato to Lamoer).

“I believe she has since been contacted by another detective who she has indicated has been more helpful,” Wagner said.

Plato said he would ask for an update on the case when he had his weekly meeting with Lamoer today.

The friend’s mother was not in Cape Town on Monday.

Police spokesman Andre Traut said that arrests had been made but the case was still being probed.

Last month, police released two photographs of a suspect and police spokeswoman Fienie Nimb said the images were the only ones available for publication.

The incident happened about 1am on April 6.

Nimb said it was alleged the student and her friend had been standing outside their parked vehicle when two armed men approached.

“The suspects robbed them of their jewellery, cellular phones and wallets.”

Nimb said the suspects had threatened the student and forced her to hand over her bank card and give them her PIN.

A third man took the card and left, while the student and friend were forced into their car by the other two.

The woman was raped in the car and she and her friend were driven to Milnerton, where the attackers ran away.

Anyone with information may contact the investigation officer Raymond Mitchell on 082 522 1085 or CrimeStop on 0860 0 10 111.
