A cash-in-transit heist in Salt River culminated in a gun battle that saw the attackers “shooting like hell” at security guards.
|||Cape Town - Police are searching for a robber believed to have been shot during a cash-in-transit heist in Salt River.
A shoot-out between security guards and robbers in Salt River Road on Wednesday resulted in a guard being taken to hospital and one of the robbers wounded.
After the shooting, the security guards took refuge at the nearby fire department.
Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut said the incident happened at around 10.30am while three guards were collecting bags of cash at a business. Five armed men approached the cash-in-transit van.
“The suspects fired several shot and in the process, one of the security officers was wounded,” Traut said.
The security guards returned fire.
Traut said police believe one of the robbers was wounded.
“The suspects, however, managed to assist the injured suspect into a silver VW Polo in which they fled with bags containing cash.”
A witness, who did not want to be named, said he ran for cover. “Those guys were shooting like hell, maybe 10 shots were fired.”
