Cape Town - Former president FW de Klerk will be admitted to a hospital in Parow, outside Cape Town, on Tuesday, where he will be fitted with a cardiac pacemaker, Beeld reported.

De Klerk confirmed on Monday that he would undergo the procedure and that he expected to be discharged on Wednesday.

He and his wife Elita returned to their home in Cape Town from Europe over the weekend after he experienced dizzy spells.

De Klerk, who shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with former president Nelson Mandela for his role in the abolition of apartheid, still sustains a rigorous programme and frequently undertakes international public speaking engagements.

Acquaintances on Monday night noted that De Klerk looked to be in good health after experiencing two major health crises seven years ago.

The former head of state underwent surgery in June 2006 to have two malignant nodes removed from his colon.

Shortly after the operation, he developed a lung infection, but he made a full recovery. - Sapa
