Honeymoon murder accused Shrien Dewani would be fit to stand trial in South Africa, a London court has been told, according to a report on Thursday.

Hugo Keith, representing the South African government, argued in the high court on Wednesday that Dewani would receive a good standard of pshyciatric care, if extradited to South Africa.

The Star newspaper reported that Keith referred to a recent pshyciatric report on Dewani, which states that he “will improve in mental state and indeed will recover… it is highly unusual for cases of depression and/or post traumatic stress disorder not to improve in the medium to long term”.

The two judges adjourned the case.

Dewani stands accused of masterminding the killing of his bride Anni, in Khayelitsha in Cape Town, in November last year.

The couple's taxi driver, Xola Tongo, has made a plea bargain with the state, admitting that he helped Dewani set up the murder, allegedly meant to look like a hijacking.

Tongo is serving 18 years in jail. The two alleged hitmen were still awaiting trial.

The UK signed an extradition order for Dewani in September, which he is now trying to appeal. - Sapa
