SA needs strong leadership and effective and efficient government systems to combat corruption, according to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

Madonsela was a guest speaker at the launch of a two-day Pan-African Anti-Corruption Conference organised by the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) and the Institute for Security Studies in Camps Bay.

“We are left with about three years before we report back to the (UN) on what we have achieved against our undertakings on the achievement of Millennium Development Goals. It’s fair to ask whether African leaders really have the ability and conviction to help Africa realise the African dream,” Madonsela told dignitaries and academics from Africa and Europe.

The HSF aims to support democratic transitions towards a non-racial democratic society, and promote sustainable developments in the country.

Madonsela said corruption was a “monster” that played a big role in the African dream, and the country needed “strong leadership, effective and efficient government systems, a sound legal and policy framework, the openness and transparency about rights and service standards, and the protection of whistle-blowers” to combat it.

HSF chief executive Peter Witterauf said Madonsela had done “very good work” in combating corruption, and was tough as nails. ”There is a lot of work that needs to be done, we need more people like her who are ready to fight.”
