Two more ATMs have been blown up in the city in the past 24 hours.

The latest bombing was at 2am on Thursday in Southfield.

This followed another bombing in Emms Drive, Nyanga, on Wednesday.

It brings the number of ATM bombings in the city to 10 this year.

Police spokesman Andre Traut said on Thursday morning that an “explosive device was detonated” in Victoria Street, Southfield, at 2am.

“Information suggests that three suspects were responsible for the incident, and that they fled without any cash in a dark-coloured BMW vehicle.

They are yet to be arrested.

“Fortunately no one was injured during the incident,” Traut said.

A resident of Victoria Street told the Cape Argus on Thursday morning that she heard a loud explosion at about 2am.

“We heard a massive explosion. I can’t even describe the sound. It was deafening. Then shortly after that, the alarm went off.”

She and her husband woke up and her husband went outside to see what had happened.

“The Absa ATM next to Shoprite had been blown off and there was a black BMW as well as a couple of guys in balaclavas.

“My husband was trying to see the car’s registration as well as to hide so as not to be seen by the men, but he could not see it as the car was parked too far.”

She said the men fled and the police and ADT security arrived soon afterwards.

At 8am, a police forensic team was still at the scene.

Last month, the Cape Argus reported that a group of seven bombers took just 15 minutes to plant explosives around an ATM, wait for the blast, fill their bags with cash and make a clean getaway.

This was how the attack in KTC near Gugulethu unfolded.

It was the first of four ATM bombings in the Western Cape in nine days.
