A 58-year-old man travelling in his motorised wheelchair on the N7 at about 3am on Sunday died after being struck by a car.

Vanessa Jackson, ER24 spokeswoman, said paramedics who were on their way back from another call were flagged down by bystanders.

She said the man had been in his wheelchair travelling over the N7 Bridge in Goodwood near Voortrekker Road when the accident happened.

Residents had reported often seeing the man travelling along the N7 in his wheelchair, she added.

“Unfortunately nothing more could be done for the man as his injuries had been too severe and he was declared dead on the scene.

“The driver of the car was not injured.”

Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said police were investigating the circumstances of the accident.

No one has been arrested.

* Six people were injured on Sunday when their car veered off a road and rolled down an embankment in Faure Street near the R102, according to Jackson.

Travelling in the car were two men and four children aged between four and 10.

Some of the passengers were thrown from the car as it rolled, while the others were removed by a bystander at the scene. The men and three girls were treated for various injuries while a four-year-old boy was airlifted to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by police.

l Two people died and three others were seriously injured in an accident on Friday night.

Harold Williams, provincial traffic spokesman, said the accident occurred on the N1 at the Okavango turn-off.

“Two people died, three were seriously injured and the driver escaped injury.”
