Two men have been sentenced to 18 months in jail for buying airtime worth nearly R100 000 using cloned credit and debit cards.

Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court magistrate Amrith Chabilall jailed Mogamat Martin, 40, of Mitchells Plain, and Shaun Visser, 37, of Strand, after they entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the State.

Martin pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fraud and Visser pleaded guilty to eight counts of fraud, and both admitted they had contravened the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act between July 27 and August 24 last year.

The men admitted that they forged credit and debit cards and used them to buy goods at Pick n Pay in Hermanus and Checkers or pay for services at at least two hotels. The actual loss the businesses suffered was R93 712.70, according to the charge sheet.

The pair have been in custody since August and are expected to be released from prison in October.
