Many provinces have seen tragedy on their roads as the festive season rolls on.
|||Ten people were killed and another 25 injured on South African roads on Wednesday.
Five people were killed in a crash on the N1 between Laingsburg and Prince Albert Road in the Karoo in the morning, Western Cape police said.
A minibus and a car collided head-on around 3.30am. An 11-year-old girl in the minibus, and two men and two women in the car were killed, Captain Bernadine Steyn said.
Seventeen people were seriously injured and taken to hospital.
Another two people were killed on the N1 near Cape Town when two cars collided, Steyn said. A woman and three children travelling in one of the cars were seriously injured.
In Gauteng a man was killed and two others injured when their truck overturned along the M1 freeway at the N1 split from Johannesburg to Bloemfontein, ER24 paramedics said.
In Durban a man was critically injured when he was struck by a heavy goods truck on North Coast Road. He sustained significant head trauma, Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said.
The SABC reported that in the Eastern Cape two pedestrians, both aged 26, were killed in separate incidents in Butterworth. One was a hit-and-run death in Zizamele township, while the other was killed on the N2 highway, near Walter Sisulu University.
In Mpumalanga a driver was critically injured when his delivery vehicle slammed into the back of a truck, on the N12 near Witbank, ER24 paramedics said.
Between December 1 and 19 there had been 710 fatalities on South African roads, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said on Tuesday. Some 592 fatal crashes that led to 710 deaths were recorded in that period, spokesman Ashref Ismail said.
Factors that contributed to the crashes were high speed, dangerous driving, fatigue among long distance minibus drivers, overloading and tyre failure. - Sapa
