Police are hunting for a woman who snatched a two-week-old baby after claiming she would help the teenage mother apply for a child grant at Home Affairs.
On Tuesday around noon, the suspect approached 16-year-old Xolisiwe Magoda at her home in Harare, asking to accompany her to the offices in Bellville.
Magoda, with her baby daughter Asenathi, went with the woman.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said when they arrived at Home Affairs, the woman gave Magoda R20 for a taxi fare to return home to collect the toddler’s clinic card.
He said the suspect told Magoda she needed the clinic card to apply for a birth certificate and then she could put in an application for the grant.
The woman also offered to look after Asenathi while her mother returned home.
But, when she arrived at Home Affairs, the woman was missing along with her baby, said Van Wyk.
A case of kidnapping has been opened.
In September last year, a 20-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the abduction of seven-month-old baby “Makyla” allegedly taken from a Brooklyn home.
The baby was found at a house in Kraaifontein.
The woman was arrested and charged with abduction. - Cape Argus
