|||The 35-year-old Bonteheuwel man shot outside the Western Cape High Court in a suspected gang-related attack is in a critical condition at Groote Schuur Hospital and police are hoping that he lives to tell the tale.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said on Wednesday that a manhunt for the gunman was under way and that investigators had little information obtained from witnesses to Tuesday’s incident.
The .38 Rossi revolver, which the suspect threw on the pavement as he fled, has been sent for forensic testing and fingerprint testing.
Van Wyk said the serial number had been removed.
He said the victim, identified by witnesses as “Wallie”, was not able to speak.
“We hope he will survive,” Van Wyk said.
Groote Schuur confirmed the man, who was shot in the neck, was in a critical condition.
The victim is the cousin of Winston van der Leer – an accused in a gang-related double murder trial, which has been running for the past two weeks.
Van der Leer, who was with his cousin at the time of the shooting, is out on bail in the trial along with his co-accused, Eugene Williams. The remaining three accused, Virgil Adendorff, Clint de Hahn and Ryan Abrahams, are in custody.
The five men are all alleged members of the Junky Funky Kids gang in Heideveld and stand accused of the murder of alleged Westside gang leader Cameron Philander and his girlfriend, Liezel Saunders, on July 18, 2010.
The case was was postponed on Wednesday. - Cape Argus
