|||A man who raped and murdered his 8-year-old niece was sentenced to 30 years in jail in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.
Lindile Qhayi, 33, was handed down concurrent 30-year jail terms, for rape and murder, by Judge John Hlophe, as part of a plea and sentence deal.
Zhikona Qhayi's sand-covered body was found in bushes just 800 metres from her home in October last year, a day after she went missing.
Her uncle was arrested in November.
Western Cape police spokesman Lt-Col Andre Traut said detectives had worked around the clock to bring the perpretrator to book.
“Today, justice was served. The sentence will send a strong message to would-be offenders that crime does not pay, especially (if) perpetrated against children.” - Sapa
